There are a number of requirements within the 5+1 Internship, as set by the Psychology Board of Australia, and we are committed to breaking these down into practical, manageable components. Wherever we identify that additional guidance, structure, or clarity may be helpful, we ensure appropriate resources are available to support you.
Summary: Requirements of the 5+1 Internship Year
Below is a clear summary of the core requirements for the 5+1 internship year from the 2025 Guidelines for the 5+1 Internship.
Psychological Practice – 1,500 Hours (Total Required)
- Minimum 500 hours must be client contact.
- Up to 60 hours of the 500 client contact hours may be simulated learning.
- Client-related activities may include:
- Reading and research to support formulation and diagnosis
- Case consultation with colleagues
- Formal and informal reporting
- Scoring assessments
The supervisor provides guidance on which client-related activities are appropriate, taking into account the provisional psychologist’s development needs and work context.
Supervision – 80 Hours (Total Required)
- Minimum 50 hours must be individual (one-on-one) supervision with the principal supervisor.
- 80 hours equates to approximately 1 hour of supervision for every 18 hours of practice, although frequency is determined by the supervisor.
- Provisional psychologists who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander may count culturally informed supervision toward the 80-hour requirement.
- A progress review must be undertaken every six months with the principal supervisor.
Direct Observation Requirements
Every six months, the supervisor must observe at least four sessions, including:
- Minimum two psychological assessment sessions
- Minimum two intervention sessions
The supervisor and provisional psychologist determine the most appropriate methods for supervision and direct observation.
Education and Training – Minimum 60 Hours
- At least 60 hours of education and training must be completed during the internship.
- The principal supervisor determines the type of activities required to ensure all professional competencies are met.
- Training must include demonstrating a health equity and human rights approach when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and people from diverse groups.
Required Reporting
Throughout the internship year, provisional psychologists must complete regular reporting, including:
- Logbook (LBPP-76)
A detailed record of supervised psychological practice, supervision hours, and education and training activities. The Board may request submission at any time during the internship and prior to general registration approval. - Six-Monthly Progress Reviews
Conducted by the principal supervisor and provisional psychologist. These form part of supervisory activities and are not submitted unless requested. - Final Assessment of Competence Report (PACF-76)
Completed by the supervisor. This is the key document that assures the Board the intern has met the required competencies for general registration.
