Working with Drug and Alcohol

This group supervision explores the features associated with drug and alcohol problems, some of the key elements and principles to consider and evidence based therapy approaches. Drug and alcohol use are prevalent in society, so what defines problematic use? This group supervision session encourages discussion around the features that define problematic use and the need to define the treatment goal with the client at the outset – harm minimisation, abstinence, no change/other goal.

Behaviour change is really difficult for most of us and the unique challenges associated with changing problematic drug and alcohol behaviours are explored. Discussion is encouraged around assessing the client’s readiness for change and ‘meeting them where they are at’. Evidence based treatment approaches and practical examples are presented and discussed.

Working with clients with drug and alcohol problems often brings up a number of professional and ethical considerations that are explored in the supervision session. These considerations might include risk assessment, engaging in illegal activity, providing a service if the client is under the influence, organisational policy e.g. no drug tolerance policy.

Supervisees will be invited to present cases, discuss difficulties common when working with problematic drug or alcohol use, or ask specific questions.

Group supervision offers supervisees the opportunity to work with a small group of other (provisional) psychologists, share experiences, and learn from others whilst having a topic focus and being supported and lead by a Board Approved Supervisor.
