DBT

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a behaviour therapy that balances the need for acceptance and the need for change and was originally designed for treating clients with Borderline Personality Disorder and/or who experience chronic suicidality. However, since it’s inception by Dr Linehan, the research has grown significantly on the efficacy for DBT’s use with a wide variety of disorders. Trans diagnostically, and at the heart of the problem for clients who may benefit from DBT is pervasive emotion dysregulation. Pervasive emotion dysregulation often stems from unmet emotional needs and results in impulse control difficulties, negative self-image and interpersonal difficulties.

The DBT group supervision offers an opportunity to orient to this treatment approach (if this is a new area for you) such as understanding the goals of DBT, considering the underpinning theories weaved throughout and necessary for case conceptualisation, and look at some common resources and tools for DBT. It also offers an opportunity to explore the four areas covered in DBT skills training – mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal effectiveness.

Supervisees will be invited to present cases, discuss difficulties common when working from a DBT framework, and to practice examples of chain analysis with clients in individual therapy. DBT group supervision is offered monthly throughout the year. For those that opt to attend more than one DBT group supervision session, ideally we will be building on discussions and learning from previous group supervision sessions. If you attend just the one DBT group supervision session, you will benefit from recommendations for resources for further self-directed learning.

Group supervision offers supervisees the opportunity to work with a small group of other (provisional) psychologists, share experiences, and learn from others whilst having a topic focus and being supported and lead by a Board Approved Supervisor.
