Can You Start the 5+1 Internship Before Your Fifth-Year Degree Is Conferred?

Jun 11, 2026

This is one of the most common questions asked by provisional psychologists nearing the end of their fifth year of study.

The answer is clearer when the two separate issues are separated:

  1. Starting a 5+1 internship, and
  2. Working as a provisional psychologist outside placement while still studying.

These are governed by different rules and are often confused.

You Cannot Start the 5+1 Internship Until Your Fifth Year Is Completed

The Psychology Board’s December 2025 5+1 Internship Program Guidelines are clear that a provisional psychologist must first complete their fifth-year qualification before they can enter the internship program.

Section 3.1.1 of the 5+1 Internship Guidelines 2025 states:

“The Board accepts the fifth-year qualification to have been completed on receipt of an official academic transcript or letter from the Head of School that confirms successful completion of all required competencies and an eligibility to graduate.”

This means the Board does not require attendance at a graduation ceremony or formal conferral before progressing into the 5+1 pathway.

However, it does require evidence that all components of the degree have been successfully completed.

This can include:

  • an official academic transcript,
  • a completion letter from the Head of School, or
  • evidence of conferral.

The Psychology Board’s Internship FAQ further clarifies this point: https://www.psychologyboard.gov.au/Standards-and-Guidelines/FAQ/Internship-FAQ-5-1.aspx#

“If you are doing the 5+1 pathway, you can provide your internship plan after completing your fifth-year qualification. You don’t need to wait until you have formally graduated, but you need to provide evidence of your successful completion of all components of the degree, e.g. transcript or evidence of conferral.”

Can You Submit Your INPP-76 Before Completion?

Yes.

Students can prepare and submit their internship program plan (INPP-76) before formal graduation documents are issued.

However, submitting the form early does not mean the internship can commence early.

Section 3.1.2 states:

“Ahpra will assess the internship program plan and only approve it once the degree has been completed.”

This is the key point many students miss.

Even if:

  • the INPP-76 has been submitted,
  • a supervisor has been arranged, and
  • employment has been secured,

the internship itself cannot begin until the fifth-year qualification has been completed, the INPP-76 has been signed by a primary and secondary supervisor and all evidence has been provided to Ahpra.

What Does “Completed” Actually Mean?

“Completed” does not necessarily mean:

  • attending graduation,
  • waiting for a ceremony, or
  • waiting months for formal conferral.

It means the university has formally confirmed that:

  • all coursework is complete,
  • all competencies have been met, and
  • the student is eligible to graduate.

Once this evidence exists, the student may proceed with the 5+1 pathway.

Can You Work Before the Fifth Year Is Completed?

Potentially yes — but this is a separate approval program referred to as the Working in Addition to Placement Program.

The Board’s Higher Degree webpage states: https://www.psychologyboard.gov.au/Registration/Provisional/Higher-Degree.aspx

“If you want to work in a psychology role separate to your higher degree placements, you will need to apply for Board-approval (using form AWOP-76).”

Approval is required where:

  • the person uses the title “provisional psychologist” or similar titles, and/or
  • the role involves direct client contact or psychological service provision.

Importantly, this approval pathway is separate from the 5+1 internship.

Key Takeaways

  • You cannot start the 5+1 internship while still completing your fifth-year qualification.
  • Submitting the INPP-76 early does not allow the internship to commence early.
  • Ahpra will only approve the internship once the fifth-year qualification has been completed.
  • You do not need to wait for a graduation ceremony if the university can provide evidence of successful completion.
  • Working as a provisional psychologist outside placement is a separate approval process.
  • To work outside placement while studying, provisional psychologists generally require Board approval through the appropriate working-in-addition-to-placement process.

For many students, the fastest pathway into the 5+1 internship is requesting a completion letter from their university as soon as all academic requirements are finalised.
