CatholicCare Supervision Scholarship: Program Outcomes and Impact

#5+1 #internship 5+1 internship 5+1 internship guidelines board approved supervision provisional psychologist funding psychology scholarship supervision scholarship Jun 19, 2024

The CatholicCare Supervision Scholarship, delivered in partnership with Provisional Psychologist Hub, was established in response to critical workforce pressures across the psychology sector and the need to improve equitable access to high-quality supervision for provisional psychologists undertaking their 5+1 internship.

As the program cohort progresses through their internship journeys, early outcomes indicate the scholarship is contributing meaningfully to workforce development, service capacity, and equity of access across the sector.

Expanding Access to Structured Clinical Supervision

A core objective of the scholarship has been to remove barriers to consistent, high-quality supervision during a critical stage of professional development.

Through the provision of a 12-month Provisional Psychologist Hub Platinum supervision membership, recipients have accessed structured weekly individual supervision, group-based learning opportunities, and ongoing professional development support aligned with Psychology Board of Australia requirements.

This model has supported continuity of supervision that is both clinically robust and responsive to the developmental needs of early-career psychologists, particularly those working in high-demand service environments.

Supporting Equity in Workforce Participation

The scholarship cohort reflects a broad cross-section of emerging psychologists working across diverse communities and settings.

Across 123 recipients:

  • First Nations participants represented 2.4% of the cohort

  • Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds represented 48.0%

  • Regional, rural, and remote participants (MMM 3–7) accounted for 12.2%

These figures demonstrate meaningful engagement with priority populations and highlight the scholarship’s role in supporting participation from groups who have historically faced structural barriers to training and supervision pathways.

Rather than existing as isolated demographic outcomes, this diversity reflects the program’s underlying intent: to improve accessibility to supervision structures that enable sustained participation in the psychology workforce.

Strengthening Workforce Capacity in High-Need Settings

A significant proportion of scholarship recipients are embedded in services experiencing sustained workforce demand.

Within the cohort, 82.1% of recipients are completing placements in high-need practice settings, including community mental health services and child, youth, and family-focused programs.

This alignment between scholarship participation and service demand has contributed to increased supervision capacity within environments that are often under-resourced and managing complex clinical presentations. In practice, this has supported continuity of service delivery while ensuring provisional psychologists are appropriately supported in working with high-quality and experienced practitioners.

Building Capability and Professional Confidence

Across the cohort, structured supervision combined with group learning and targeted professional development has supported the development of clinical competence and professional identity.

Common themes emerging from supervision engagement include increased confidence in clinical formulation and decision-making, improved integration of theory into practice, and stronger preparedness for transition to general registration.

While individual progression varies across settings and experience levels, the consistency of supervision has been identified as a key enabling factor in supporting safe, reflective, and ethically grounded practice.

Partnership Impact and Sector Collaboration

The partnership between CatholicCare and Provisional Psychologist Hub has enabled a coordinated approach to supervision delivery that aligns clinical governance, workforce needs, and registration requirements.

By combining a values-driven community service organisation with a quality supervision provider, the program has supported scalable supervision access while maintaining consistency in quality and compliance.

This collaborative model has also enabled responsiveness to workforce distribution challenges across metropolitan, regional, and rural contexts, ensuring support is delivered where it is most needed.

Stakeholder Perspective

“The Supervision Scholarship has provided an important opportunity to strengthen both workforce capacity and early-career development within our services. We have seen clear benefits in the confidence and capability of provisional psychologists participating in the program, particularly in high-demand settings.”

Looking Ahead

Early outcomes from the CatholicCare Supervision Scholarship demonstrate the value of targeted investment in provisional psychologist development as a workforce strategy.

Beyond supporting individual interns, the program is contributing to broader system outcomes, including improved access to supervision, strengthened service capacity in high-need settings, and increased participation from diverse communities.

As demand for psychological services continues to grow, initiatives of this nature play an increasingly important role in supporting a sustainable, skilled, and equitable psychology workforce for the future.
