Google Meet FAQs

Jul 28, 2023

Provisional Psychologist Hub recently transitioned from Zoom to Google Meet. Here are a few of the questions we have answered recently that may support you in the transition. With any technology change there can be a few teething challenges, as a reminder we can prevent any frustration by running a test of your Google Meet with you at no cost so you aren't wasting time in session, book a time using this link; https://calendly.com/provisionalpsychhub/15min

1. My Google Meet is freezing or runs slower than I would like.

If you don’t already have Google Chrome this is the browser that we recommend for Google Meet. You can download here; CLICK HERE

  1. Update your Google Chrome and make sure the right settings are in place. Here is a helpful video that shows you how to update your Google Chrome browser and prevent freezing on Google Meet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_j8-0yS33I
    1. Update your Google Chrome
    2. Turn off  “use hardware acceleration when available” then> relaunch.
    3. Remove unnecessary extensions.
    4. Clear your cache.
    5. Restart your computer, you should do this everyday when you finish work to optimise your computers performance but also after any big changes to your settings.

2. I don't have a Google Account.

You only need to setup a Google Account if you are working off an ios or Android device such as a tablet or iPhone. It is free to setup an account but we do recommend you work off a computer when doing supervision, on a computer you would not require a Google Account to access.

3. I am working off a Mac device and it won't let me share my screen.

In order to share your screen on a macOS device you need to have your camera, microphone and screen recording permissions enabled. It is likely you already have microphone and screen enabled by default but you may need to adjust your settings for screen recording permissions.

How to enable screen recording permission for Chrome on macOS
1. Select the Apple menu (in the upper left corner of the screen).
2. Choose System Preferences.
3. Select Privacy & Security, then Screen Recording.
4. Adjust the slider next to Google Chrome from off to on.

4. When I am on Google Meet it picks up lots of sounds around me. How can I fix this?

You need to enable noise cancelling in your audio settings. We also recommend using a headset or headphones during your session if your location is public or noisy.

How to enable noise cancellation

1. Select the 3 dots to display your menu, you can do this is the preview screen of your Google Meet before you join the session or during.

2. Select settings

3. Select audio

4. Ensure "Noise Cancellation" is ticked.
