PROVISIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST MYTH BUSTERS

Did you know that most of the time we spend on the phone to potential new supervisees is spent busting myths surrounding pathways to registration? It’s often disappointing to hear that someone’s pathway has been negatively impacted or delayed due to misinformation, so we thought why not just bust a few myths with you all this month.

2 hours is a lot of supervision, I don’t need to do 1 hour for every 17 hours of practice. I can get my supervisor to provide a letter to AHPRA that I can’t afford this volume of supervision and it will be fine.

For all 4+2 and 5+1 internships it is the responsibility of the supervisee to complete the required volume of supervision which is 1 hour for every 17 hours of practice. If these hours are not completed it will be highlighted during progress reports which will result in contact from AHPRA for remedial action. The longer this is delayed the more difficult it becomes to rectify. If assistance is required to catch up on supervision, please contact us and we will be happy to assist with an action plan.

I need to get my provisional registration before I start looking for work because all the jobs ask for it.

Unless you have completed your 5th year of study or have done your qualifications overseas you are unlikely to be eligible to apply for Provisional Registration without an internship plan. You will not be able to complete an internship plan without a suitable job role. The first step to securing an internship is sourcing supervision, the second is obtaining a suitable job role and the third is confirming your supervision so that you can finalise your application for provisional registration to AHPRA. CLICK HERE for our free seminar on Looking for Psychological Practice to consider options on searching for suitable employment for the 4+2 and 5+1 pathways.

I don’t need to notify AHPRA if I am going on leave.

The maximum amount of leave allowed for in the 4+2 and 5+1 internships is 8 weeks. Anything more than this is considered extended leave and prior approval from AHPRA is required. All Provisional Psychologist Hub memberships include leave allowance. Check your handbook to see how much you have built into your membership each year.

It’s okay to submit my application to AHPRA without the signature from my Principal and Secondary Supervisor.

Applications without the relevant signatures will be declined until a signature has been obtained. This can be more challenging after submission to AHPRA because those parties that are endorsing and approving your application may require changes to be made before doing so. In our experience applications with minimal to no changes will be approved faster.

Entry into the 4+2 internship is closed therefore I need my masters to gain my general registration.

The 4+2 internship pathway remains open for applications until June 30, 2022.

So long as I have at least 14 hours of psychological practice each week I will gain my registration in 2 years.

2 years is the estimated time it takes to complete the internship with a role that has 30 or more hours of psychological practice. 14 hours is the minimum weekly psychological practice hours for a 4+2 internship, 17.5 hours is the minimum weekly psychological practice hours for a 5+1 internship.

Hardly anyone gets into the 4+2 internship its extremely competitive and I am more likely to get into a masters.

We continue to take on new Provisional Psychologists everyday. In 2021 every supervisee who has gone through application consultation has been approved.

To reduce the expense of my supervision I can just do weekly group supervision.

There is a maximum amount of group supervision for both the 4+2 and 5+1 internships that will not allow for weekly group supervision. All group supervision must be approved by your principal supervisor to ensure that you are adequately supported throughout your internship.

REMINDER: NEW MEMBERSHIP PACKAGES AND TOP UP OPTIONS

Just a reminder to those of you who may have missed it last month when we launched new fast track membership packages! These packages will showcase all the most recent additions we have provided to our members while providing additional supervision included in the month to month payments in direct response to our member feedback.

Both 4+2 and 5+1 internships are based on practice that spans 44 weeks each year, this provides allowance for 8 weeks of leave to be taken on an annual basis. Our first release packages directly catered to this with 45 weeks of group and individual supervision. What we have found is that our members work on average 48 weeks out of the year. In response to this we have provided 3 new membership packages that provide 48 weeks of supervision instead of 45 and for those who prefer to stay on their existing membership we have included some top up membership packages for individual and group supervision.

For all our members that are at application consultation stage you can retain your existing level of membership selected or choose to change to a “fast track” package provided you commence before the end of the 2020/2021 financial year. We will provide all those commencing both options before purchasing.

CLICK HERE to view at our latest membership changes or to purchase a top up package.

If you are an existing member and would like to make adjustments to your membership to one of our ‘Fast Track’ packages email learn@provisionalpsych.com.au

If you have not yet purchased application consultation and you would like to stay with one of our standard memberships, then we urge you to book in soon to avoid missing out. CLICK HERE to purchase application consultation.
